PHOENIX IS RISING

Clark College will unveil the 2008 edition of its nationally-honored
student art and literary publication on May 13

VANCOUVER, Wash. – The 2008 edition of Phoenix, the award-winning student art and literary publication of Clark College, will be unveiled during a celebration on Tuesday, May 13.  The event will be held from 3-4 p.m. in the Penguin Student Lounge, located in college’s Penguin Union Building.   Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.

Following the unveiling, guests will be invited to visit the college's Archer Gallery, where a joint reception for the Art Student Annual will be celebrated and selected pieces from the 2008 edition of Phoenix will be on display.

Both the 2007 and 2006 editions of Phoenix received first place with special merit awards in the annual magazine competition of the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA).  The 2004 edition of Phoenix also received first place with special merit honors in the ASPA competition.

In addition, the 2006 Phoenix earned second place honors in the Pacific-Western Division of the national Community College Humanities Association's Literary Magazine Competition.  The Community College Humanities Association is the only national organization that exclusively serves to strengthen the humanities in the nation's community colleges.

Phoenix is funded by the Associated Students at Clark College (ASCC) to encourage the creative efforts of Clark College students. Flat art work, photographs of three-dimensional work, poetry, and prose are all considered for publication.

Dr. Rita Carey, Professor of English, is the Literary Advisor to the Phoenix staff.  Dr. Carey noted, "Phoenix dedicates itself to giving Clark's finest artists, writers and musicians a chance to publish their work in an award-winning publication. The quality of the writing, photographs and artwork is just superb."

Martha Lewis is the Art Advisor to the Phoenix staff. Lewis observed, "We are especially proud that Phoenix is entirely produced by students and all of its artwork and literary pieces are created by students."
