ARTS LOVERS DEMONSTRATE
THE ART OF GIVING

George and Joan Peekema donate funds for arts scholarships
and mature learning at Clark College

VANCOUVER, Wash. – The winter quarter at Clark College got off to a bright start today with the announcement that a Vancouver couple has endowed a scholarship to support the arts and a gift for mature learning at Clark College.

George and Joan Peekema provided a $100,000 gift to establish an endowment for the Joan Peekema Scholarship for the Arts.  George Peekema said the gift was motivated by his desire to honor his wife and their mutual love for the arts.   Because the scholarship was established as an endowment, the gift will provide full-tuition awards for Clark students in perpetuity.  Joan Peekema’s own art can be found on Clark’s main campus.  In 2003, she donated her steel sculpture Gentle Commitment, which is located near Bauer Hall.    Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.

George and Joan Peekema have both taken computer classes through the college’s Mature Learning program.  Citing the value of Mature Learning classes to senior citizens as well as a need for additional community support of the program, they donated an additional $10,000 gift.   Clark College Foundation President Lisa Gibert said, “This gift received matching funding provided by an anonymous donor.  Together, these generous gifts will provide $20,000 in new funding to support this wonderful program.”

Tracy Reilly-Kelly, Program Manager for Mature Learning and Travel Studies, said, “At Clark College, we’re dedicated to lifelong learning and our Mature Learning program plays a critical role in fulfilling our mission.  This generous gift from George and Joan Peekema will enhance our ability to deliver the dedicated service, personal attention and instructional excellence that is the hallmark of our Mature Learning program.”
