LEARNING LEADERSHIP

Gail Liberman, director of Clark College’s Teaching and Learning Center,
earns statewide honors for her commitment
to teaching, learning and assessment

Gail Liberman, director of Clark College's Teaching & Learning CenterVANCOUVER, Wash. -- Gail Liberman, director of Clark College’s Teaching and Learning Center, has been named a recipient of the 2008 Anna Sue McNeill Teaching, Learning and Assessment Award. The award is designed to recognize an individual’s contributions to teaching, student learning and assessment in a public two- or four-year college in Washington State. Liberman will be among seven honorees statewide who will receive the award on April 30 during the Pacific NW Higher Education Teaching and Learning Conference in Spokane.

Dr. William S. Moore, Project Director of the Transition Mathematics Project of the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges (SBCTC), praised Liberman’s selection. “Gail’s been a great contributor to numerous assessment, teaching and learning retreats, so I’m delighted we’re able to recognize her at the conference,” Moore said. “She’s an active and vocal participant in the statewide network of leaders in faculty development. I’ve particularly appreciated the way she raises good and thought-provoking questions to encourage our group to think more clearly and concretely about the challenges with addressing teaching and learning issues across the system.”

Liberman became coordinator of Clark College’s Teaching & Learning Center in 2006 after serving for nearly 20 years as the college’s dental hygiene program director. In 2007, she received the Martha Fales award for outstanding service to the state of Washington and the dental hygiene profession from the Washington State Dental Hygiene Association (WSDHA).

In June, Liberman will attend the nationally-recognized Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) Institute in Ontario, CA. She hopes to then lead or participate in an ongoing FLC movement at Clark College. In July, Liberman will teach a workshop at the Pacific Northwest Dental Conference in Seattle. She will also travel to Chicago in July to participate as an item writer for the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam.

“As director of the Teaching and Learning Center I have had the joy and the unique opportunity to engage with faculty, staff and administrators focusing on teaching and learning effectiveness and student success,” said Liberman. “Working closely with the center’s Steering Committee, we have expanded the scope for faculty, instructional and organizational development here at Clark. We will soon be moving into our new space with colleagues in Outcome Assessment and Staff Development and that will allow for a more coordinated effort in meeting the needs of Clark faculty and staff. This job is exciting, challenging and rewarding and I have enjoyed every moment of it.”

Liberman is the second Clark College faculty member to receive the McNeill award. Biology professor Rebecca Martin is a past recipient. The award, which was established by SBCTC in 2007, honors Anna Sue McNeill, who served in higher education at the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges for 30 years. Award organizers say McNeill was committed to excellence in assessment, teaching and learning and provided leadership statewide through ongoing communication and special events.
