A MUSICAL TOUR OF LONDON AND A MELODIC TRIP AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 MINUTES

A U.S. premiere and music from around the world
are highlights of the winter quarter concerts
of the Clark College Orchestra, Concert Band and Concert Choir

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Music lovers can journey to London then travel around the world in 80 minutes when the Clark College Orchestra, Concert Band and Concert Choir present their winter 2008 concerts.

The orchestra concert, “A Tour of London,” will be held on Wednesday, March 12.   The performance by the concert band and choir, "Around the World in 80 Minutes," will take place on Friday, March 14. 

Both performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Royal Durst Theatre of the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, 3101 Main St., Vancouver.

“A Tour of London”

Under the direction of music director/conductor Donald Appert, the Clark College Orchestra concert will feature the U.S. premiere of Antonio Rosetti’s Clarinet Concerto in E flat, performed by Julius Klein, artistic director of the Slovak State Symphony (Kosice).  The concert will begin with the Overture to Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini.  The second half will be a musical tour of London via Ralph Vaughan William’s Symphony No. 2

Julius Klein, solo clarinetist and executive director of the Slovak State PhilharmonicJulius Klein studied piano and clarinet during his early years and subsequently attended the Conservatory in Košice as a clarinet major.  He furthered his studies in Bratislava, where he entered the Academy of Musical Arts graduating with honors.  From 1992–1997 he taught clarinet classes at the Košice Conservatory.  Julius Klein is currently the solo clarinetist and the executive director of the Slovak State Philharmonic, Košice. 

Julius Klein is also active as a chamber musician with the Košice Wind Trio and was awarded the second prize in the competition in Slovakia in 1987.  Apart from chamber music performance, he is active as a soloist and has appeared at concerts in numerous countries: Austria, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Holland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, South Korea, Spain and the United States.

Klein was featured soloist during the three-week U.S. tour of his Philharmonic Orchestra in 1994 and also in 1998 in Mexico.  He has made recordings for both radio and television in Europe.  During the summer of 1997, he performed at the first European conference on clarinet and saxophone in Budapest, and in 1998 he was invited to attend the First International Asian Clarinet Festival in Beijing.  He served as a member of juries at clarinet.

“Around the World in 80 Minutes”

Under the direction of April Duvic and Rich Inouye, the Clark College Concert Choir and Concert Band will share the stage, presenting an international musical tour highlighting selections from France, Israel, Russia, Africa, Australia, Korea, Spain, and Italy.
