PREVENTING STUDENT LOAN DISCRIMINATION

Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Brian Baird will meet with students and staff at Clark College on Tuesday, August 5 at 1:15 p.m. to focus on efforts to end discrimination against community college students in the lending process

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Brian Baird (D-WA 3rd) will meet with students, teachers and administrators from Clark College to announce another step forward in their efforts to end discrimination against community college students in the lending process.

At the news conference, Congressman Baird will announce that he will be sponsoring companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to Senator Murray's Preventing Student Loan Discrimination Act

The legislators’ visit will begin at 1:15 p.m. at a baking class in the college’s Culinary Arts department.  That will be followed by a news conference in Clark’s Penguin Student Lounge at 1:35 p.m.  Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver.

Senator Murray introduced the Preventing Student Loan Discrimination Act in the U.S. Senate after several lenders offering federal student loans cut back or stopped lending to community college students, forcing these students to find new lenders, juggle two loans at once, or take second jobs.

Senator Murray and Congressman Baird will discuss their joint efforts to pass legislation which will mandate that lenders that receive federal subsidies can't deny loans to eligible students based on the school they attend, the length of their collegeprogram, or their income level.
