Rock the Vote logoVANCOUVER, Wash. – From Vancouver to Olympia to Washington, D.C., the message is clear.  Wednesday, October 1, 2008 is officially Clark College Day.

Washington Governor Chris Gregoire issued a proclamation designating the day and congratulating the college on the anniversary.  In the proclamation, the governor praised the college for “serving more than 12,000 students each quarter with outstanding faculty, staff and supporters.”  The governor also noted that the college generates “more than $700 million annually for the state’s economy in the form of jobs, earnings and sales, while education the workforce and leaders of tomorrow.”

Noting that the college is celebrating special events over 75 hours, Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard declared October 1-4, 2008 as “Clark College 75th Anniversary Celebration Days” in Vancouver.  The mayor presented the proclamation to Clark College President Robert K. Knight during the Vancouver City Council meeting on Sept. 8.  In his proclamation, the mayor called upon “the citizens of Vancouver and the alumni of the College to recognize the important role that this superb community college continues to play in supporting the dreams, aspirations and success of each student, thus enriching our community for the next 75 years and beyond.”

On Sept. 24, Rep. Brian Baird added to Clark College’s history by adding his congratulatory remarks to the Congressional Record.  Rep. Baird said, “In its 75th year, Clark College continues to meet the ever-evolving education needs of people in our community.  Graduates continue to share stories of how Clark College was a starting point for professional and personal achievement.”

Cover of Clark's 75th anniversary commemorative bookOn October 1, as part of the kickoff of the 75th anniversary celebration, the college will unveil a commemorative book, Voices and Dreams:  Celebrating Clark College’s Diamond Anniversary.  Produced by the college’s department of Communications and Marketing, the book was made possible by a gift from an anonymous donor through the Clark College Foundation.

With beautiful photos and vibrant text, the book takes readers through each decade at Clark College through the voices of alumni, faculty, staff, administrators, and supporters.  Alumni interviewed for the book include former State Senator Al Bauer, Daily Insider editor Tony Bacon, Vancouver City Council member Jeanne Harris and many more.  Faculty, staff and administrators interviewed include past interim president Ellis F. Dunn, faculty emeritus Dr. Antonio Scarpelli, and Clark sports legend Claude “Skeet” O’Connell.

In honor of the college’s 75th anniversary, the book will be available in the Clark College Bookstore from Oct. 1-15 for just $7.50.  After October 15, the book will be available for $15.  Proceeds from the book benefit the Clark College Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.  To contact the bookstore, call 360-992-2149 or visit their Web site.

In the Cannell Library, visitors will find a display case that will focus on a different decade of the college’s history each month during the Diamond Jubilee year.  During October, the focus is on the 1930s.  The items on display include the diploma that was presented to the college’s first (and only) graduate in 1934, an issue of the 1936 Galapagon yearbook, and a 1939-1940 wooden replica of the original Oswald, believed to be the only one still in existence.  During November, the focus will turn to the 1940s.  Additional displays will feature a focus on the 1950s (December), 1960s (January), 1970s (February), 1980s (March), 1990s (April) and 2000s (May).

On October 1, the college is scheduled to unveil a new version of its 75th anniversary Web site.  The site features highlights of the college’s history as well as an updated list of events scheduled during the yearlong Diamond Jubilee celebration.
