A MUSICAL CELEBRATION OF SPRING

An international artist and a world premiere
will be among the highlights of concerts
by the Clark College corchestra, chorale and women's choral ensemble

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Clark College will offer "Some R and R" and a breath of spring during their final musical performances of the 2008-2009 academic year.

Clark College Orchestra

The Clark College Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director/Conductor Donald Appert, will present its Spring Concert on Sunday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Royal Durst Theatre of the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations to the Orchestra Fund will be accepted at the door. The Royal Durst Theatre is located at 3101 Main Street in Vancouver.

Entitled “Some R and R,” the concert will open with Ravel’s "La Valse" and conclude with Rachmaninoff’s "Piano Concerto No. 3." Gregory Partain will be the piano soloist. The program will also include the U.S. premiere of "Nara Variations" by Donald Appert. This work for string orchestra was inspired by a trip to Japan in January of 2007 and premiered by the Ashiya Chamber Orchestra in Kobe, Japan on December 28, 2007.

Guest artist Gregory Partain

Originally a native of the Pacific Northwest, Gregory Partain has appeared as recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist throughout the United States and has performed overseas in Poland, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Russia, and Greece in his twenty years on the professional concert stage. In 1986, he was the national winner of the KMS Resident Artist Competition in Seattle, then won first prize in the Memphis Beethoven Piano Sonata Competition, second prize in the International Bartok-Kabalevsky Competition in Virginia, and was a finalist in the Concert Artists Guild New York Competition. He has also won honors in the San Antonio International Piano Competition and is a laureate of the Beethoven Foundation Auditions in Indianapolis. Partain’s most recent concerto appearances took place in Yaroslavl, Russia and Athens, Greece, where he performed the Rachmaninoff second concerto with orchestras of those cities. He has also appeared with the Seattle Symphony, the Eugene Oregon Symphony, and the Sunriver and Peter Britt summer festivals, and the Clark College Orchestra in Vancouver, performing concerti by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Bartok, Prokofieff, and Gorecki. Partain earned his B.M. from the University of Washington and M.M. and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, and is currently Professor of Music at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

Clark College Chorale and Women's Choral Ensemble

The Clark College Chorale, co-directed by Janet Reiter and April Duvic, and Women’s Choral Ensemble directed by April Duvic presents their end of term concert, Wednesday, June 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fort Vancouver High School Auditorium, 5700 E. 18th St. dmission to the concert is free, with donations to the Music Department accepted at the door.

The Women’s Ensemble will be joined by special guests, the Skyview Women’s Choir directed by Philip Denton. Highlights of the program include the Chorale performing Hallelujah from Beethoven’s “Mount of Olives,” the American classic, "Home on the Range" with Jean Kent on flute, and the gospel rouser "Let Everything That Hath Breath" by Jeffrey Ames with soloists Rosemary and Richard Warner.

The Women’s Ensemble will perform several selections from the program they will sing on tour to South Korea later in June, including "Amazing Grace" arranged by Portland composer Joan Szymko, "He’s Gone Away" arranged by Clark College music professor Gordon Trousdale, a Native American piece entitled Lakota Wiyanki and the traditional Korean folksong Nodle Kangbyon. The Skyview Women will join the Clark Women’s Ensemble on the upbeat musical theatre piece "The Rhythm of Life" from “Sweet Charity.”

Chorale auditions

The Chorale announces auditions for new members for the summer as it prepares to perform at the College’s 75th Anniversary Festivities on October 1, 2008 in Gaiser Hall. The Chorale is comprised of Clark College students, faculty and staff, and singers from the community.

Auditions will be held Tuesday, May 27, at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, May 29, at 6:30 p.m. in room 104 of the Clark College Music Building on Fort Vancouver Way.
