CELEBRATING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE:
THE CLARK COLLEGE FACULTY SPEAKER SERIES

The college will launch the new series on March 5, when English professor Joe Pitkin shares his Fulbright teaching exchange experience in the Republic of Hungary.

English professor Joe PitkinVANCOUVER, Wash. – On March 5, Clark College will launch its new Faculty Speaker Series with a discussion by English professor Joe Pitkin, who will share his Fulbright teaching exchange experience in the Republic of Hungary.   Pitkin will discuss his experiences in Hungary and share the process by which faculty members can become part of the Fulbright teaching exchange.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 8:15-9:45 a.m. in the Penguin Student Lounge, located in the Penguin Union Building on the northwest corner of the college’s main campus.  It will feature refreshments, followed by the speaker’s presentation and a question and answer session.

Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver.  Parking will be available in the college’s red and yellow parking lots.

About the Clark College Faculty Speaker Series

The Faculty Speaker Series, established by Clark College with support from the Clark College Foundation, honors individual faculty members and celebrates academic excellence.

Each fall, winter and spring quarter, the Faculty Speaker Series will showcase recent experiences that have enriched both the life and teaching of a Clark faculty member.  Throughout the series, faculty members will share their developmental experiences with the college community – and members of the community at large – while addressing some of today’s most intriguing issues.

Dr. Rassoul Dastmozd, Clark College Vice President of Instruction, said “The Clark College Faculty Speaker Series is a wonderful opportunity to share the expertise of our faculty members with our college and the greater community.”

Clark College President Robert K. Knight noted, “Three years ago, our college established a Distinguished Lecture Series, drawing regionally and nationally renowned speakers to the college.   This is the next step.  I’m very proud that our Faculty Speaker Series continues that tradition by focusing on the talents and achievements of our own faculty.”
Biology professor Kathleen Perillo

The spring 2008 lecture will feature biology professor and acclaimed ecologist Kathleen Perillo.  Perillo, who co-chaired the college’s recent teach-in on global warming, will share her sabbatical journey through Switzerland, France and Mexico as she explores sustainability issues and their relationship to the United States.

The spring 2008 lecture will be held on Friday, April 25 at noon in the college’s Penguin Student Lounge.

About Professor Joe Pitkin and the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program

Joe Pitkin joined the English department of Clark College in 2000. He holds degrees from Utah State University in liberal arts and from New Mexico State University in English.  He is presently completing a degree in environmental science from Washington State University Vancouver. In addition to his work as a teacher, Joe is a poet, novelist, and member of the rock band The Gravitropes.

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program provides opportunities for qualified educators to participate in direct exchanges of positions with colleagues from other countries for six weeks, a semester, or a full academic year. In exchanging positions with foreign teachers or administrators, program participants have the opportunity to live and work in the cultures of their host countries, an experience which has benefits for the teachers, their schools, and their communities.

Since 1946, the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program has helped nearly 23,000 teachers and administrators contribute to mutual understanding between the United States and countries around the world.
