Sabbatical Leave

A sabbatical is leave granted to tenured faculty members to provide opportunities for study, research, and creative activities to enhance the College's instructional and research programs. It may involve a research and/or writing project, learning new skills connected to your teaching at Clark, or other professional development that contributes to your growth as an educator.

As per the current AHE contract, sabbatical leaves at Clark College may be granted to tenured faculty members in at least their 6th year of service at the College (since either having been hired in a tenure track or special programs faculty position, or having completed a previous sabbatical leave). Faculty members interested in sabbatical submit a plan that outlines the purpose of the leave and how the time will be spent. Faculty are eligible to apply for up to 3 academic quarters of leave for the next academic year.

Each sabbatical application will be evaluated on its own merits, and must be consistent with Chapter 28B.10.650 RCW, which states that the sabbatical's purpose is providing opportunities for study, research, and creative activities for the enhancement of the College's instructional and research programs. The professional placement and advancement committee (PPAC) will review applications. PPAC recommendations are made to the appropriate Vice President based upon the six criteria listed below:

The VPI makes a recommendation to the Board of Trustees, and they make the final decisions about the sabbatical leave.

Sabbatical Applications

Applications are submitted in the Professional Placement and Advancement (PPAC) Canvas shell. If you are interested in submitting an application, please contact the Teaching and Learning Center (tls@clark.edu) to be added to the shell.
