Ask questions to find out about services that can help you make informed decisions
and be a successful student. Take advantage of those services.
Consider taking courses such as COLL 101: College Essentials, to help you transition
to college, connect to campus resources, and explore your areas of interest.
Make a firm decision and declare your major officially. Make sure your decision on
the major is based on your career choice.
Examine Your Skills, Interests and Values
What do you do well?
What do you like to do?
What have you accomplished in the past that you can build upon?
What is important to you?
What skills or characteristics would you like to develop?
Investigate Possibilities
Make a list of majors that sound interesting to you based on your skills, values,
interests, and goals. Don't eliminate anything because you don't want to take one
or two difficult courses.
Research information regarding job descriptions, educational requirements, entry-level
jobs, status of the job market, and future predictions for your interest areas. The
Career Center offers many resources to assist you with this research.
Participate in campus activities, student success workshops, and classes that give
you an opportunity to build these skills. Be sure to explore the opportunities offered
through the Office of Student Life and the Associated Students of Clark College (ASCC).
Progress Towards Your Degree
Take foundation courses upon which to build additional skills (for example: Math and/or
English).
Take courses in areas of interest.
25-50 Units Earned
Explore Your Options
Experience different job settings for yourself by volunteering, job shadowing, or
by working part-time.
Begin to focus in on a specific academic area of interest.
Begin to research transfer institutions if you intend to transfer to another college
or university for your bachelor's (or other) degree.
Progress Towards Your Degree
Complete pre-college coursework (if applicable).
Complete a long-term education plan with an advisor in your chosen area of study.
Apply to your program, if appropriate.
50-75 Units Earned
Progress Towards Your Degree
Continue to focus on General Education and Major Area Requirements.
Implement Your Decision
Continue to build a solid set of credentials for entering the job market by seeking
practical work or related experience.
Begin to consider your plan for after college, whether transferring to another college/
university or employment.
Meet or communicate with an advisor at your intended transfer institution(s) to plan
for remaining classes appropriately, and understand the admissions process.
75-90+ Units Earned
Progress Towards Your Degree
Complete remainder of General Education and Major Area Requirements.
Submit a graduation application to Advising Services no later than the 10th day of the term you plan to graduate.
Complete application and admissions to transfer school, if appropriate.
Prepare for Life After Graduation
Conduct your job search campaign. Prepare for your job search by:
Writing a resume, conducting information interviews, and networking
Attending workshops to assist you in learning effective job search techniques
Attending job fairs and recruiting events
Utilizing Career Services for mock interviews, resume critiques, job search
