What is eLearning?
Clark College offers a variety of learning modality options giving students the opportunity to attend classes beyond the traditional on-campus experience. Your options include several online styles, hybrid, and in-person:
Online Modality Options
Clark College offers four styles of online modalities. All include use of a course management system such as Canvas. Some include scheduled meetings that are virtual or in person or both. You can search by each of the modalities in the Class Search screen as shown next. Each different modality is described below.
Online Asynchronous (previously Online)
A class in which all required instruction occurs online asynchronously (without a set time to attend but within a specified time frame) using web-based tools. There are no required real-time (synchronous) class meetings; however, the instructor may choose to offer optional office hours and other activities where attendance is not required. Remote proctored exams are an allowable activity for this modality. There is a $30 fee associated with these courses.
Online Scheduled (previously Online-Remote)
An online class where instruction takes place synchronously (virtual meetings held at specific days and times noted in the class schedule) using internet/web-based tools such as Zoom. The class will include requirements scheduled asynchronously (with a due date). Remote proctored exams may be scheduled for this modality. There is a $30 fee associated with these courses.
Online Scheduled w/In-Person (new as of July 1, 2024)
An online class where instruction takes place synchronously (virtual meetings held at specific days and times noted in the class schedule) using internet/web-based tools such as Zoom. In-person activities (usually on campus) such as assessment, exam, and/or orientation are required for class completion. The number of in-person activities will not be greater than the number of credits enrolled, e.g., a five-credit class will not schedule more than five in-person activities. Look for the expectation of in-person activities and meeting pattern in the class schedule and notes. There is a $30 fee associated with these courses.
Online Asynchronous w/In-Person (new as of July 1, 2024)
A class in which all required instruction occurs online asynchronously (without a set time to attend but within a specified time frame) using web-based tools. Scheduled in-person activities (assessment, exam and/or orientation) are required for class completion. The number of in-person activities must not be greater than the number of credits enrolled (e.g., a five-credit class is limited to five in-person activities). Look for the expectation of in-person activities in the class notes. There is a $30 fee associated with these courses.
Hybrid
These classes combine online (asynchronous) instruction with face-to-face (synchronous) classroom time. Attendance and participation is required for both the online and face-to-face meetings. A percentage of the traditional face-to-face instruction time (usually weekly meetings) is displaced with online learning activities. On-site or remotely-proctored exams are allowed for this modality. There is a $30 fee associated with these courses.
