Exploring Connection at Student Involvement Fair
Quarterly event encourages students to engage on campus

Waves of students rolled through the Spring Student Involvement Fair, held on Thursday, April 14, at the Gaiser Student Center. Some were laughing and chatting with the representatives behind the colorful booths. Others shyly made their way down the aisles, hesitating until they were greeted with a warm smile. The quarterly event, coordinated by the Associated Students of Clark College (ASCC), provided new and returning students with the opportunity to explore the variety of clubs and programs available on campus.
Dozens of brightly decorated tables held props, activities, and posterboards to give students a taste of what they’d experience by joining each different group.
Some booths offered resources, such as the Tutoring Center and Academic Advising. Others highlighted the chance to find community with fellow students who share interests, like intramural sports, The Iceberg comic publication, and the Dungeons & Dragons Club.
Creating Space for Thoughtful Dialogue

One such group, the Philosophy Club, likes to theme its booth at each term's involvement fair. This term, they styled their table to mimic a "College Game Night," complete with beer pong — but with a philosophical twist. Instead of alcohol, each Red Solo cup contained a question for the student to ponder after bouncing the ping-pong ball into it.
Student Noah Barclay, who joined the club last term, said the questions are meant to promote mindfulness. “We often don’t give ourselves enough time to think,” he said.
The Philosophy Club has been growing, and they’ve begun the process of becoming an official student program instead of a club — final approval comes from the College Board of Trustees in June. One impact this would have on the club is that some of its ambassadors would have the opportunity to join the college’s Ethics Committee.
At its core, the Philosophy Club provides students with the opportunity to connect with one another in meaningful ways.
“It provides students the space to debrief and process the outside world from an academic lens,” Noah said.
Expanding Access to Essential Care

Another club represented at the fair was the Period @ Clark College Club, which aims to dismantle the stigma around menstruation and advance menstrual equality. Their booth featured a Tampon Toss game. The group is currently working with the Basic Needs Hub to ensure students have access to period products.
In addition to inviting fair attendees to join the club, they encouraged individuals (including staff and faculty) to join their upcoming packing party. Participants will help assemble period care kits, which will be distributed to the Basic Needs Hub. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 29, at 1 pm in Hanna Hall, Room 106. The week prior to the event, the club will be collecting additional period products via collection bins, available across campus.
