WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT 2007

The theme was "Generations of Women Moving History Forward" as Clark College and YWCA Clark County honored eight remarkable women at the 2007 Women of Achievement (WOA) Celebration luncheon.

The 2007 Women of Achievement honorees were: Sister Joelle Aflague, Val Alexander, Randi Holland, Mari Greves, Leilani Russell, Joy Imboden Overstreet, Kathi Wiley Gladson and Judy Zimmerman.

Clark College guests included (left to right) 2007 All-Washington Academic Team member Max Holloway; Communication Studies instructor and 2007 Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Scholar Deena Bisig; 2007 All-Washington Academic Team member Sue Corey; and Gaydena Thompson, former Clark College physical education faculty member and winner of the college's 1996-97 Exceptional Faculty Award.

KGW-TV anchor Laural Porter returned for her second year as emcee of the event, which was held March 6 at the Vancouver Hilton.

Over 650 people -- a record turnout -- attended the 2007 celebration. The 2007 event marked the 23rd year for the Women of Achievement celebration.

2007 Young Woman of Achievement Nicole Schriock

Nicole Schriock of Fort Vancouver High School, seen in the photo on the left, was named the 2007 Young Woman of Achievement, receiving a $1,000 college scholarship based on her commitment to community service.

The scholarship was made available through a $15,000 donation from community member and 2006 WOA honoree Donna Roberge to establish the scholarship fund.

Roberge, a former professor of sociology at Clark College, has also served as a board member for YWCA Clark County.

In addition, seven young women received the YWCA's Co Clark College Interim President Bob Knight addresses the audience.

mmunity Service Award and a $200 award from First Independent Bank. They are: Ashli-Marie Grant, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics; Kayla Griffin, Fort Vancouver High School; Menglu Michelle Jiang, Mountain View High School; Jane Lee, Mountain View High School; Jessica Stavig, Hockinson High School; Amy Tedder, Battle Ground High School; and Andrea Trujillo, Columbia River High School.

Clark College Interim President Bob Knight drew a smile from emcee Laural Porter as he spoke about women of achievement in his own life: his mother, the women in his class at West Point (the first in the school's history) and his wife Paula.

Knight also acknowledged Pat Watne, former Director of Women's Programs at Clark College.

Watne, who established the Women of Achievement celebration, rose to the applause of the gathered guests.

Each of the honorees spoke movingly about what the award meant to them.

They encouraged guests to pursue their own passions, celebrate life and serve their community.
