Faculty Speaker Series ~ Charlene Montierth November 4, 2010 171 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

“Volcanoes and Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Oh My: Living on a (Tectonic) Edge.” Clark College geology professor Dr. Charlene Montierth will launch the college’s 2010-2011 Faculty Speaker Series with a presentation on geologic risks in the region, why we face these hazards and what we can do to mitigate them.

 

 

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Gail Robinson April 20, 2010 71 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

The spring 2010 lecture featured English Professor Gail Robinson, award-winning educator and writer.  Gail shared two chapters of her upcoming book as well as her experiences with writing "From Mourning to Memoir: One Writer's Journey Into Her Story." She said "Memoir is very much about making sense of things - not only what happened in the past, but what it means for us in the present."

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Sally Tomlinson November 12, 2009

"From Far Out to Mainstream: Life Cycle of the Psychedelic Rock Posters, 1965-73" Sally discussed the flowering and dismantling of the hippie movement as best reflected in the poster imagery that spoke a distinctive idiom directed at an unconventional, music-loving audience.

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Dick Shamrell May 6, 2009 101 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

"Dick and Oswald's Excellent Australian Adventure" Dick shared his love of astronomy and physics and his discoveries during a recent journey to Australia. This lecture was followed with a star party, which was free and open to the public.

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Laurie Brown March 6, 2009 62 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

"The Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer Gene -- Are You at Risk?" Explored what your genes reveal about your risks for these cancers. We all have the protective BRCA (breast cancer) gene, but recent research shows that BRCA mutations make both men and women more susceptible to the development cancers in breast and ovarian tissue.

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Christina Kopinski November 4, 2008 71 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

Clark College Journalism Professor Christina Kopinski shared her reflections on the current state of the media and ethics. The hour-long discussion included ethical criteria established by the Society of Professional Journalists, the difference between libel and slander, and ethical challenges facing journalists today.

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Kathleen Perillo April 25, 2008 190 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

The spring 2008 lecture featured biology professor and acclaimed ecologist Kathleen Perillo.  Perillo, who co-chaired the college’s recent teach-in on global warming, shared her sabbatical journey through Switzerland, France and Mexico as she explored sustainability issues and their relationship to the United States.

Faculty Speaker Series ~ Joe Pitkin March 5, 2008 28 Faculty, Staff, Students and Community Members Participated

 

The Faculty Speaker Series showcases recent experiences that have enriched both the lives and teaching of Clark’s faculty members.  English instructor Joe Pitkin discussed his experiences in Hungary as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher and shared the process faculty members must follow to become part of the Fulbright teaching exchange.
