The Clark College Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz Ensemble are two of three jazz curriculum opportunities offered at Clark College. Jazz improvisation skills are not mandatory for either ensemble, but highly encouraged. Throughout the year, students are guided through interactive study on correct performance techniques of different jazz styles and concert repertoire. Above all, teamwork and leadership are a focused learning outcome. Another jazz curriculum offering is the general survey course, MUSC 135 “Jazz Appreciation.” The class is intended for all levels of jazz enthusiasts, from the casual jazz listener to the experienced jazz performer. During the term, students are guided through an interactive process of learning how to listen to jazz, a chronology of jazz periods and the societal events that encouraged these transitions, and the biographies of key performers, culminating in a live fieldwork study project on local jazz groups. If you, or anyone you know, have any interest in “jazz@clark” or questions regarding the jazz festival, feel free to contact the Director of Bands, Rich Inouye, at 360-992-2188 or email: rinouye@clark.edu
