In 1992, the Washington State Legislature passed a law that granted high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take college-level classes at community colleges to fulfill high school diploma requirements while also earning college credits. Participants in Running Start can only take courses numbered 100 or higher (college-level) and must have qualifying scores on the writing, reading and college algebra COMPASS tests prior to enrolling. A sample Running Start test is available for your use.
Interested students should see the Running Start Events page to learn the date of the next Running Start test and deadlines. Print and follow the instructions for signing up for a test and applying.
In addition to following the test sign-up instructions, private or home-schooled students are required to contact their local public high school to access the Running Start program. Admission to the program must be coordinated through a local, state-funded high school.
