English Placement

The COMPASS exam is no longer required for writing placement at Clark College.  Following one of the priorities outlined in the 2016 Academic Plan, Clark English faculty were charged with improving placement for students with the goal of providing more accurate and valid placement. When they are placed in the right course, we know students have a better chance at succeeding in that course and, thus, completing their education.

After extensive research, English faculty decided on a multiple measures approach that provides student with several placement options.  Rather than taking a standardized test, students can now place directly into English 101 via a high school GPA, Smarter Balance scores, or a variety of other options.  One of those options is a custom-created placement tool called the Readiness Assessment. Designed and created by Clark faculty, this tool is an option for anyone who does not place in English 101 automatically via another measure.
