Services

International Student Advising

The Office of International Programs provides all international students access to an International Student Advisor who works with students throughout the application process, welcomes you on arrival, and provides support services and immigration information throughout your stay at Clark College.  No matter what your question, you will be welcomed, and your International Student Advisor will help you find the answers.

The Office of International Programs becomes the home away from home for international students at Clark College.  We encourage students to stopy by often and socialize with staff and other students.  Important information is available in the office including:  How to find an On Campus Job, Income Taxes in the U.S., How to Access Campus Services, and many others.

Our Advisors in the Advising Center are available to you on a walk-in basis or by appointment to discuss your program requirements and assist you with selecting your classes.

Clark College also has a Writing and Tutoring Center which is easily accessible to all students.  If you need extra help in a subject for a few days or for the duration of the quarter, you can visit the Center and meet with a tutor.  The staff are particularly helpful and enjoy seeing you succeed as you do better and better in your classes each quarter.

Health Care

All international students must have medical/health insurance coverage while studying in the U.S.  Clark College provides this insurance coverage to all international students and the $186.00 fee is automatically added to your tuition bill each quarter when you register for classes.  Coverage can also be purchased at an additional charge for your spouse and/or children.

Clark College maintains a Student Health Center staffed by nurse practitioners who specialize in outpatient adult health care. The Center is open weekdays during business hours, is very low cost, and will address most non-life-threatening situations.

In the event of an emergency, Southwest Washington Medical Center is only 6 kilometers from Clark, and the designated trauma center for the Portland metropolitan area, Emmanuel Hospital, is only 14 kilometers from Clark.

Information about locating services and making insurance claims is available in the International Programs office.  The insurance provided by Clark College to currently enrolled students does not cover students while they are in their home country.  When accessing medical services, students much pay up-front and then file a claim for partial reimbursement.

Dental and optical insurances are available for an additional cost.

Housing Options

Most international students at Clark live in apartments close to campus. Some live by themselves in a single apartment, but many soon become familiar with the area, make friends and enjoy sharing a larger apartment with other students.

Monthly rental fees vary from about $450 for a one-bedroom unit, up to $800 for larger units with special facilities such as swimming pools, fitness centers, etc. Most apartments are unfurnished so youmust figure the cost of obtaining furniture and household items into the cost of living in the U.S.  Apartment information is available in the Office of International Programs.

If you prefer to live with an American host family.  ANDEO-International Homestays is a professional organization that finds homes for international students.  Living with a host family is a great way to get acquainted with a new culture and will help you learn many things about life in the U.S.

ANDEO Homestays include:

  1. A carefully screened family that is ready to welcome you into their home and include you in their daily lives.
  2. A comfortable private room with access to a study area.
  3. Meals--the Classic program is 3 meals per day; the Bed & Breakfast program is breakfast only.
  4. A home that is close to public transportation.  The typical bus commute is 20 to 60 minutes.
  5. Information about your host family prior to your arrival; upon arrival, you will also receive orientation materials and an ID card that lists your host family information and the ANDEO Homestay office contact number.
  6. Airport Pickup at Portland International Airport (PDX).
  7. Andeo staff members who will be available throughout your stay to help you get the most out of your homestay experience.

Homestay applications should be completed and sent to ANDEO at least 1 month before you arrive!  Please contact ANDEO-International Homestays for more information.
