Saving Information to a Disk

Copy information into Notepad save it to a disk

  1. floppy disk and jump driveInsert your 3.5" floppy into the slot, or your USB Flash Drive (also known as thumb drive, jump drive, etc.) into the USB port.
  2. From any open window (Proquest, InfoTrac, a web site, etc.) select* the text you want to save.
  3. From the menu at the top of the screen. select Edit --> Copy.
  4. Click on the Notepad icon (bottom of the screen) to open a new Notepad document.
  5. From the menu in the Notepad window, click Edit --> Paste. The selected text will show up in the Notepad document!
  6. Save the Notepad document to your disk: From the file menu in Notepad, select File Save. Click the arrow next to "My Documents" and select the drive with your storage device (A: drive for floppies, or look for "external memory device" for thumb drives)
  7. Click the minimize button in the Notepad window (the "minus" button in the top right corner). The Notepad document will appear as a button at the bottom of the window. When you want to paste in more text, click on the button to open up the Notepad document.

(* To select: with the mouse, place the curser where you want to start, click and hold the left mouse button and you drag the curser to the end of the desired text, then let go. The area will be highlighted.)

Using "Save As" to save entire web pages

  1. Insert your 3.5" floppy into the slot, or your thumb/jump drive into the USB port.
  2. From any browser window (Explorer, Firefox) select File --> Save As --> then select "Web Page Complete" From the file type menu.
  3. From the "My Documents" window, select the drive appropriate to your storage device . A copy of the web page and all associated files will be copied to your floppy disk. You may view the web page from the floppy disk even if you are not connected to the internet, as long as the computer you are using has browser software..
