Clark’s first CommUNITY Luncheon of the academic year brought students togethers on October 14 in the Penguin Union Building student lounge. Hosted by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), the event welcomed students to connect, ask questions, learn about on-campus resources and share a meal together.

The turnout was impressive; students steadily streamed into the room and immediately began mingling. One interaction stood out: “I remember you! You’re the one who helped me a lot,” a student said upon recognizing an employee. That moment captured the spirit of the event—creating personal connections and reinforcing community.

Amy Tam from Entry Services began the presentations by introducing the Welcome Center as a focal hub for student support, highlighting student ambassadors who lead campus tours, work at Clark events, and staff the one-stop desk to assist students with a wide range of questions.

Megan Jasurda from the Disability Access Center (DAC) addressed the topic of neurodiversity and the kinds of supports available through DAC. She described how the Center coordinates student accommodations, assists with documentation and planning pathways, facilitates peer mentorship, and provides quiet study spaces. To complement this support, Megan also spotlighted mental health and counseling services.

Courtney Linkous from Advising Services guided students through the process of scheduling advising appointments. She underscored that proactive engagement with advisors can help students plan their academic and career paths with greater confidence.

After the presentations, the floor opened for student questions. Attendees asked about student job opportunities and ways to get more involved. The Q&A allowed students to probe deeper into how they might use these resources.

Looking ahead, future CommUNITY events this year will integrate more group discussions, allowing students and employees to explore topics in smaller settings and build stronger connections across campus.

As evidenced by this gathering, it provides an opportunity to connect with peers, faculty, and staff, and enjoy food, meaningful conversation, and community.

The next CommUNITY Luncheon will be on Tuesday, October 28 at noon in PUB 161.
