About the Artist:
Beth Heron (formerly Kohler) is faculty at Clark College, teaching metal sculpture. She was awarded an Exceptional Faculty Award in 2005-06.
From her website "Metal has always been my material of choice. I work with bronze because its historical aspect is important to me. It is both beautiful and enduring. I am attracted to the arduous work and ritual pouring of the molten metal. When I cast, the fiery stream I pour connects civilizations past and present. Often, I will combine the cast bronze with stone, stainless steel and copper to create a rich contrast of materials."
Artwork Description:
A stainless steel rectangular column holds a circular shape of bronze wrapping around a circle of stainless steel.
The title refers to the lift of a wave, and was inspired by the idea of a message in a bottle adrift at sea. "It's kind of like we're throwing a bottle out into the water and hoping someone in the future will find it and open it," Heron said. (Columbian, 04-09-2010)
Acquisition Information:
Clark College commissioned Heron to create the sculpture and time capsule (to be opened in 2034). It was unveiled in the spring of 2009, as part of the 75th Anniversary of Clark College.
