About the Artist:
Michael Carpenter is an accomplished oil painter and illustrator based in Oregon. Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, he discovered his passion for drawing early on and earned a summer scholarship to the Academy of Art in San Francisco. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he studied visual arts at Clark College and illustration at Art Center College of Design in L.A., where he trained with notable artists such as Dan McCaw and Don Putnam.
Michael spent over two decades as a commercial illustrator and graphic designer in Portland, OR, working with major clients including Nike, Tillamook, and Oregon Tourism. Eventually, he shifted his focus to fine art, studying landscape and figurative painting in workshops across the West.
A signature member of Oil Painters of America, Michael’s work is inspired by the landscapes of the American West and has been exhibited across four states.
Artwork description:
Abstract shapes, with an arc open at the top, mostly rounded and linear shapes. The steel has a thick patina, and the work is signed and dated on the bottom left.
Acquisition Information:
In spring of 1972, Mike (Michael) Carpenter a student at Clark College, created the sculpture in the welding lab as part of a "special project." Facilities services mounted the piece to the building. Dick Stensude was quoted "Who says that the Arts and Technology aren't compatible!" —"The Run of the Mill" May 30, 1972
