Clark College’s Communications and Marketing Department
earns honors from District VII
of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations


VANCOUVER, Wash. -- For their work in publications, design and photography, Clark College communications specialists have been honored by District VII of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR).  In the district’s 2008 competition, Clark College won one gold medallion, two silver medallions and three bronze medallions.

The NCMPR Medallion Awards competition recognizes outstanding publications, advertising, and promotional campaigns created by college relations professionals from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory. The district includes more than 70 community and technical colleges and university colleges (Canada).  The awards were presented during the District VII annual conference in Yakima on Oct. 23. 

The Clark College Communications and Marketing Department received a gold medallion award for the college’s 2007-2008 athletics media guides, created in partnership with the college athletics department. 

The college received a silver medallion award for a bilingual program created for a performance tour in South Korea by the Clark College Concert Band, Women’s Choral Ensemble, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble.  In addition, the college earned a silver medallion award for a photograph taken at the college’s 2008 GED Graduation Ceremony.

The college earned bronze medallions for the college’s class schedule, a promotional series for the college’s “Road Less Graveled” event which was held to provide information to women about nontraditional career fields, and the college’s Healthy Penguin Nation logo.

Clark College President Robert K. Knight said, “It’s exciting to me that these projects were designed to support our students and staff and to reach out to our community and even audiences overseas.  Coming during our 75th anniversary year, recognition of the high quality of this work is exciting for our Communications and Marketing department and for Clark College.”

Executive Director of Communications and Marketing Barbara Kerr noted, “In the past five years, members of the Clark College Communications and Marketing department have won 31 regional and national awards for their work.  That's a tribute to their talent and hard work and to the college for supporting us.”  Kerr noted that the awards have come in diverse categories including class schedule, college catalog, Web site, electronic ad for radio or television, promotional video or CD-ROM, nontraditional media, photography, media relations, annual report, international student viewbook, adult student viewbook, athletics media guides,  newsletters for corporate and continuing education, posters, and college logos.

NCMPR is the only organization of its kind, exclusively representing marketing and public relations professionals at community and technical colleges. As one of the fastest-growing affiliates of the American Association of Community Colleges, NCMPR has more than 1,500 members from nearly 600 colleges across the United States, Canada and other countries.

Athletics Media Guides: Communications Specialist Erica Schwenneker and Senior Graphic Designer Pat McDonald worked on the college’s athletics media guides in partnership with photographer Ian Beckett and former Athletics Director Lisa Quednow-Bickler and the late Joy Varney, who served as Executive Assistant in Athletics. Support was also provided by Charlie Warner of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College (NWAACC).  Sports photography was provided by Jeff Hinds.

 Working with Music Professor Rich Inouye and Instructor April Duvic, Lead Graphic Designer Wei Zhuang created the program for the college’s musical performances in Korea.
