Washington State Court of Appeals Division II will hear cases, answer questions on March 1

VANCOUVER, Wash. – On March 1, the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division II, will be hearing cases at Clark College as a way to broaden the community’s understanding of its judicial system. Afterward, the justices will take questions from the public about legal careers and judicial processes.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Gaiser Student Center on Clark’s main campus, located at 1933 Ft. Vancouver Way. For maps and directions, visit www.clark.edu/maps.

Hearings will begin at 9:00 a.m. Justices Jill Johanson, Brad Maxa, and Richard Melnick will hear three cases: State vs. Frame, State vs. McNicholas, and Parker vs. Parkview Trails. The question-and-answer portion of the event will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m.

The Court of Appeals Division II is headquartered in Tacoma and serves Pierce, Thurston, Mason, Kitsap, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, Pacific, Skamania and Wahkiakum counties. It generally travels to Southwest Washington to hear cases twice a year. “We think it is important for the public to see and understand how the appellate courts work,” said Justice Melnick. “By travelling, we provide more of the public easier access to our court.  Transparency is increased, which in turn improves confidence in the judicial branch.”

If you need accommodation due to a disability in order to fully participate in this event, contact Clark College’s Disability Support Services Office at 360-992-2314 or 360-991-0901 (VP), or visit Gaiser Hall room 137, as soon as possible.
