Clark's English faculty help students improve literacy skills and appreciate the manner in which language shapes society and culture, while examining how various media and genres frame our communication.

Whether you want to fulfill a degree requirement or broaden your horizons, we provide courses to meet your educational goals. The English department offers survey courses that provide background in American, British, or World Literature. Exploration in specific genres include Science Fiction and Fantasy, Mythology, Fiction, Poetry, or the Novel. For students interested in literature or unique experiences and populations, consider Literature by Women, Native American Literature, American Multiethnic Literature, and Queer Literature.

Racial Justice

The English department also has a strong commitment to teaching with social equity at the center of their practice. Please read the English department's Statement on Racial Justice for more on this.

Columbia Writer Series

The English department runs the Columbia Writer Series, which regularly welcomes a diverse group of authors to the campus. Visit the Columbia Writers Series events page for scheduled events.

Phoenix

In a collaborative effort with the Art Department, students can participate in the development of our annual publication, Phoenix. This award-winning art and literary journal combine the talent and work from across the Clark community.
