VANCOUVER, Wash.—Clark College’s Mature Learning program, a part of the college’s Economic & Community Development (ECD) division, will celebrate its 43rd anniversary with a symposium that pays tribute to the program’s founder, Dr. Alfred Apsler. The half-day event is being held at Clark College’s Foster Auditorium on March 24, 2016, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The symposium, titled “Focus on History,” features an integrated program with mini-lectures from three history instructors in the Mature Learning program:
- Joe Cavalli has taught for twenty years all over the globe: Rome, Florence, Zagreb and Bahrain. He currently teaches History at Clark College, manages the college’s Model United Nations program, and teaches several history courses in the Mature Learning program. He earned a B.A. in History from Portland State and an M.A. in History from the University of Portland.
- Mark Gallagher has studied psychology, theology, Buddhism and physical sciences, receiving a Masters in Divinity from Starr King School for the Ministry. He has been a Unitarian Universalist pastor for twenty years.
- Donald Miller, a former Episcopal minister, has taught Mature Learning courses that range from music to religion to history since 2003. He received his B.A. from Whitman College and his Ph.D. in Ministry from Claremont School of Theology.
The event also will feature performances from Grammy-award winning guitarist Doug Smith and a tribute poem from Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna. Smith and Luna are also instructors at ECD. Recognition of Jim O’Connell, the 2015-16 Volunteer of the Year, and the Clark College Foundation for its ongoing support of Mature Learning will also take place.
There is a $10 registration fee to attend. Registration is available online at www.clark.edu/symposium or by calling 360-992-2939.
