Clark College Hosts A “Seuss-a-Palooza”

The gift of a book can foster the love of reading
for kindergarteners at Vancouver’s Fruit Valley and Harney Elementary Schools

VANCOUVER, Wash. – “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”  Those words by author Theodor Seuss Geisel – better known as Dr. Seuss – are at the heart of the third annual “Seuss-a-Palooza Book Drive” at Clark College.

Clark College’s Service Learning Program and the Clark College Bookstore are hoping to sell 250 books to be given to kindergarteners at Vancouver’s Fruit Valley and Harney Elementary Schools for Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2.  Read Across America Day commemorates the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

School officials and teachers were asked to select Dr. Seuss books for their kindergarteners to receive.  They selected the English language versions of “Green Eggs and Ham” and “One Fish, Two Fish” as well as the Spanish/English bilingual edition of “The Cat in the Hat.”

Copies of each book will be available for purchase and donation at the Clark College Bookstore from Feb. 7-18 for $6.85 each (plus tax).  Each book will have a nameplate for the donor's name.

The Clark College Bookstore is located in Gaiser Hall on the northern end of Clark’s main campus. Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. Driving directions and parking maps are available at www.clark.edu/maps.

Information about the bookstore is available at www.clarkbookstore.com.  For additional information, contact Marti Earhart at the Clark College Bookstore at 360-992-2261.

About the Seuss-a-Palooza Book Drive

Through the Partnership for Service in Schools project, Clark College’s Service Learning Program partners with Vancouver’s Fruit Valley, Harney, and Washington Elementary Schools to establish projects that support learning. The three schools are each sent an application, due in December, to participate in the book drive.

Two years ago, Washington Elementary School students received books purchased by donors at the Clark College Bookstore.  Last year, books were given to students at Fruit Valley Elementary School.

Marti Earhart of the Clark College Bookstore said, “The book drive has been so well received – at the college and in the community as a whole – that it has become an annual event at Clark College. This year, we’re expanding it to two schools.”

Earhart added, "Reading is important for all children. For families who are struggling, these may be the first children’s books in their homes.”

In addition to supporting the book drive, dozens of volunteers from Clark College's Service Learning department will participate in Read Across America Day.  From 9-10 a.m., they will read books by Dr. Seuss to students at Fruit Valley, Harney Elementary, and Washington Elementary Schools.
