Batter Up:  Clark College Honors Student Athletes of the Month

Student athletes Laura Luther and Evan Pickett are honored
for their leadership on Clark’s softball and baseball teams

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Two talented freshmen have been named the March 2011 Clark College Student Athletes of the Month.  Laura Luther plays third base on Clark’s softball team.  Evan Pickett plays first base for Clark’s baseball team.  Both came to Clark from Columbia River High School.

Laura LutherHead softball coach Kasey Powers notes that Laura Luther “started the season out white-hot with four home runs and 14 RBIs in four games and has not cooled off yet.”

Powers said, “In her first month as a Penguin softball player, Laura is hitting .533, with a slugging percentage of 1.289 and an on base percentage of .653.   She has hit eight home runs, 29 RBIs and has been walked 10 times in 13 games.”  Powers added, “Laura also has been playing a stellar first base for the lady Penguins.” Luther also excels in the classroom, with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.65.

Evan Pickett
Evan Pickett has established himself in the early stages of the season as “the Penguin hitman,” said baseball head coach Don Freeman. “His team leading batting average of .345 in 84 at bats indicates his consistency at the plate. He leads the team in almost every category including 29 hits, 20 singles, eight doubles, 16 runs scored, and 14 RBIs – and a home run.”

Freeman describes Pickett, who has a 3.46 GPA, as “the man to stop in the Clark offense.”

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark’s student athletes.  Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name embroidered on it. The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the “Student Athlete of the Month” program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
