Student athletes Holly Meler and Ben Miramontes
are honored for their leadership on Clark’s athletic teams
VANCOUVER, Wash. – Student athletes competing in soccer and cross country have been honored as the September 2010 "Athletes of the Month" at Clark College. Holly Meler and Ben Miramontes earned praise from coaches for their leadership on and off the field.
A graduate of Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, Ore., Ben Miramontes is a sophomore on the Clark College men’s soccer team. He is also one of the team captains. A graduate of Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, Ore., Miramontes is described as “an ultimate student athlete” with a grade point average of 3.40.
Men’s Head Soccer Coach, Biniam Afenegus notes that Miramontes was an all-star player last year and has continued his strong performance this year. Afengeus said, “Ben is a big reason that the men’s team is off to a great start with a record of 5-1-1 in league. Ben is very well respected by his teammates, as he always gives 110% effort in games and practice. He personifies maximum effort.”
Holly Meler is a freshman at Clark, having graduated from Vancouver’s Columbia River High School. In her second meet of the season, she took second overall in a race with more than 120 runners. Most recently, she took fourth overall in a race comprised of student athletes from six four-year universities.
Cross Country Head Coach, Ryan Hovde said, “With a 5K time so far this season of 18:35, Holly is poised to run for the individual NWAACC title this November. Holly’s mental and physical toughness puts her in the position to become one of Clark College’s best distance runners of all times.”
The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.
Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name embroidered on it. The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the “Student Athlete of the Month” program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
