Clark College Honors October Student Athletes of the Month

Student athletes Angela Gardner and Carlos Mendoza
are honored for their leadership on Clark’s soccer teams

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Student athletes Angela Gardner and Carlos Mendoza have been honored as the October 2010 "Athletes of the Month" at Clark College.

Angela Gardner
Women’s head soccer coach Stan Rodrigues praised Angela Gardner for her role as “women’s soccer team captain and ultimate warrior.”

Noting that Gardner has been attending Clark full-time and working more than 40 hours a week in addition to playing soccer, Rodrigues said Gardner “has been perhaps the biggest bright spot for the team this year. Her leadership has been second to none.”

This was Gardner’s final year competing on the Clark soccer team.

Carlos MendozaCarlos Mendoza was a two-year starter for the men’s soccer team and served as a goal keeper. Men’s head soccer coach Biniam Afengeus said, “Carlos is an ultimate competitor. He wants to win every game and every practice drill. It is because of his competitive spirit that he is considered one of the top goal keepers in the entire Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC).”

With a 3.4 grade point average, Mendoza plans to continue his education as a student athlete at a four-year college or university.

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name embroidered on it.  The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the “Student Athlete of the Month” program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
