Clark College Student Employment Expectations for Student Workers

Welcome to Student Employment. We are happy that you are interested in joining our team of successful students.  Please remember that all student employees are expected to be polite and willing to learn. To be successful in a new position, please acknowledge the following terms of employment:

  1. ATTENDANCE: Absences or tardiness can result in dismissal or reductions in working hours.  You are required to be on time for your shift. Time off, substitutions and trading of shifts MUST be approved in advance by your supervisor. Contact your supervisor as soon as possible if you will be absent or late.

  2. WORK HOURS:  Student workers may work up to 17 hours a week, not to exceed 69 hours in a month.

  3. BREAKS: According to state law you are entitled to a 10 minute break for each 4 hours of working time, which should be scheduled if possible to the midpoint of the shift. No employee shall be required to work more than 3 hours without a rest period. Where the nature of the work allows employees to take intermittent rest period’s equivalent to 10 minutes for each 4 hours worked.
    • If you work more than 5 consecutive hours in a shift, you must take at least a ½ hour unpaid lunch break.
    • Always arrange your break time with one of the staff members on duty.

  4. SERVICE:  Courteous customer service is the primary priority of Student Employment. While at work student employees are to make job duties are priority. Doing homework, socializing with friends and co-workers are not acceptable behaviors. Refrain from chewing gum when serving the public.

  5. LANGUAGE: The uses of profanity or offensive conversations that are inappropriate in the work place are prohibited. 

  6. PHONES: Personal phone calls and text messages should be made on your own time during your scheduled break. You are not to make or receive personal phone calls while on the job.

  7. ELECTRONIC PROPERTY: Clark College computers are state property and may be used for business purposes only.  Personal use of state property is prohibited, including personal emails during work shifts.  Refrain from the personal use of all electronics during work shifts, including cell phones, iPods, video games, personal computers, etc.

  8. CLOTHING AND PERSONAL HYGIENE: You are working in a professional environment.  You represent Clark College and often provide the first impression to students, staff and members of the community. Please ensure your clothing is clean and appropriate for professional office work.  Individual departments may have specific guidelines.  Please ask your direct supervisor for guidelines for appropriate attire in your department.

  9. POLICIES AND GUIDELINES:  It is your responsibility to be familiar with and follow the guidelines provided in the Student Employment Handbook and codes of student conduct.
