Scholarship FAQ
Where do I Search for Scholarships?
- Begin with the opportunities available for Clark students only. The Clark College Foundation offers multiple scholarships through one application process. Other opportunities are also available through other application processes. Look at the Foundation Scholarships page to explore these opportunities
- The Financial Aid Office posts opportunities that Clark students can apply for, and these may be available to students in the local area, state, or nationally. See the General Scholarships page or the scholarship wall located in Gaiser Hall near the Cashier’s Office for more information.
- Set up a profile at the WashBoard. You can enter information about yourself and they will connect you with possible opportunities that you can apply for separately.
- There are other scholarship search tools online that are also available. Never pay for a scholarship search. Remember that the more national the opportunity, the more competition there will be for the funding. Spend most of your time on Clark or local opportunities first.
How do I Apply for Scholarships?
- After finding a scholarship that you qualify to apply for, complete the application as indicated in their instructions. Be sure to complete the entire application and submit it in the format requested. Some applications are submitted online, but others must be mailed or delivered to a particular location. Give yourself enough time to submit the application.
- Make a list of everything that is required and begin on the portions that may take longer, like letters of recommendation. Be sure to complete every phase of the application process and submit by the deadline.
- Some donors require interviews before awarding funds. If you are called for an interview, treat it like a job interview and be prepared to talk about your goals and what makes you a good investment.
When Do I Apply for Scholarships?
Scholarship applications are typically available in January – April for the following
academic year. The Foundation offers a fall process with an October deadline and awards
those funds for winter and spring of the same academic year. Every organization has
different timelines and deadlines, so it is important to check for opportunities throughout
the year.
Do I have to Repay Scholarships?
No – scholarships are given by donors to supplement funding for college expenses.
They are not loans that have to be repaid.
How Many Scholarships can I Receive?
There is no limit to the amount of scholarships that you can receive. If you also
receive grants, scholarships will not decrease your eligibility. However, loans and
work study funds may be decreased depending on the amount of scholarship funding received.
Can I Lose a Scholarship?
Each scholarship comes with specific eligibility requirements which are indicated
in the application or on a separate award letter. You must maintain the eligibility
requirements, such as GPA and credit load, in order to continue to receive funding.
Appeals may be offered in the case of extenuating circumstances.
How do I Receive my Scholarship Funds?
Typically the Financial Aid Office receives the funds or notice that funds will be
arriving on behalf of a student. If you do not see the scholarship funds on your award
letter, follow up with the Scholarship office in Financial Aid or with the scholarship
provider to ensure that the funds are forwarded to the correct office. Funds are applied
to your college bill each quarter. If funding exceeds the cost of tuition and fees,
you will receive a refund through the Higher One card account. See Financial Aid for
more information about this card.
