On the Ball: Clark College Honors Student Athletes of the Month

Student athletes Borce Atanasov and Morgan Harris are honored
for their leadership on Clark’s soccer and volleyball teams

VANCOUVER, Wash. – A dynamic sophomore and talented freshman have been named the Clark College Student Athletes of the Month for Sept. 2011. Borce Atanasov and Morgan Harris were honored for their accomplishments on Clark’s soccer and volleyball teams.

Student Athlete of the Month Borce AtanasovA graduate of Aloha High School in Oregon, freshman Borce Atanasov is a starter for Clark’s men’s soccer team.  A forward and one of the leading scorers in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) conference, Atanasov is described by head soccer coach Biniam Afenegus as “an ultimate competitor. He wants to win every game and every practice drill. It is because of his competitive spirit that he is considered one of the top forwards in the entire NWAACC.”  Afenegus described Atanasov as “a great student athlete” who is studying to be a pilot and has earned his small plane license.

Student Athlete of the Month Morgan HarrisA graduate of Evergreen High School, sophomore Morgan Harris helped guide the Lady Penguins volleyball team to a 4-0 start in league play. According to head volleyball coach Jessie Uribe, “Morgan is leading the team in multiple statistical categories, including kills, hitting attempts, hitting percentage, stuff blocks, serving aces, and serve reception efficiency. She is also the NWAACC leader in service aces and ranks near the top in other categories.” Harris, who is pursuing a degree in the hotel/restaurant management field, looks forward to continuing her success in volleyball next year at a four-year institution.

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark’s student athletes.  Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name embroidered on it. The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the “Student Athlete of the Month” program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
