Tomorrow’s Scientists in Action Today

On Saturday, April 16, Clark College
will welcome 800 young scientists
as it hosts the 2011 Washington State Science Olympiad

VANCOUVER, Wash. – They are tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and technology leaders. On Saturday, April 16, they will gather at Clark College for the 2011 Washington State Science Olympiad.

More than 800 students from 14 middle schools and 17 high schools throughout Washington are expected to take part in the event, which is free and open to the public.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., creative events such as “Crime Busters,” “Microbe Mission,” “Road Scholar,” “Battery Buggy” and the popular “Bottle Rocket” contest will be held at locations throughout Clark’s main campus.  Award presentations will take place in the O’Connell gym at 5 p.m.

Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver.  Driving directions and parking maps are available at www.clark.edu/maps

According to organizers, the Washington State Science Olympiad is “an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, creating a passion for learning science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, professional development workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state, national and international tournaments.”

Clark College President Robert K. Knight said, “Our commitment to supporting the Science Olympiad is founded in our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics unit, or STEM.  We are proud to welcoming these talented young scientists and look forward to the time when we can host many of these activities in a dynamic new STEM building on our main campus.”

Information about the Washington State Science Olympiad is available at http://www.washingtonscienceolympiad.com/
