Clark College Honors March's Student Athletes of the Month

Student athletes Josh Smith and Sam Watkins
are honored for their leadership on Clark’s athletic teams

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Student athletes competing in track and field and softball have been honored as the March 2010 "Athletes of the Month" at Clark College.

Student Athlete of the Month Josh Smith
A graduate of Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., Josh Smith aspires to become a physical therapist or anesthesiologist.

Head track and field coach Amber Moore said, “Josh is a dedicated athlete who transferred from Oregon State, which does not have a track program, to see what he is capable of. He now leads the NWAACC in both the 100 and 200 meters, and contributes to the 4x100 meter relay.”

Moore added, “Josh continues to have a positive attitude and great work ethic which will help him get to the Division I level of competition.”

Student Athlete of the Month Sam WatkinsSam Watkins is a graduate of Castle Rock High School.   Head softball coach Kasey Powers describes Watkins as “a hard worker in the classroom, who is continually working to become a better more rounded student.”  According to Powers, “Sam was one of the hardest working players on the team during the off-season and it is paying early dividends for the Penguin Softball program.  In 12 games, this season Sam is hitting .400 with 18 RBIs, two home runs, two doubles and a triple. Along with her torrid hitting pace, Sam is also holding her own on the defensive side of the ball with her pitching.  She has won five games so far this year, while also setting the school record for strikeouts in a game (13) vs. Big Bend.”

Powers noted, “There is little doubt that Sam will never be outworked on a softball field.  She refuses to let up -- no matter in a game or in practice -- this is what makes her such a valuable asset to the program. Sam also leads by example.   If she continues to make major contributions like she currently is, she will teach the freshmen what it takes to be successful in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC). “

The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.

Each honoree receives a jacket with his or her name embroidered on it.  The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the Student of the Month program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
