The Engaging Students Through Collaborative Learning Institute focuses on how faculty can use Active Learning in their learning environment (classroom, lab, clinic, real world experiences) and how to assess this learning. These teaching strategies encourage various ways of learning a subject and require students to apply course content information. In so doing, these teaching strategies draw naturally on varied experiences in students’ lives, appeal to a more diverse student population, and are more motivating and engaging.
This Institute will translate learning research directly into applicable information relevant to classroom or lab practice. The faculty members facilitating this Institute are exceptional teachers practicing active learning in their classrooms.

The Enhancing Learning Through Teaching Excellence Institute connects research with practice, focusing on ideas and examples of policies and practices teachers can utilize to facilitate student learning. Emphasis will be on creating climates in classrooms that advance student learning outcomes. This will lead to an exploration of instructional strategies that promote student engagement in the classroom.
The Learning Outcomes for the Institute are:
- To create a learning centered syllabus and classroom
- To create a safe environment in the classroom that advances student learning
- To apply learning theory to course development and execution
- To manage the classroom effectively
- To become a reflective teacher in order to gain new insights in 1) the theory of teaching and learning and 2) your repertoire of skills and strategies
Faculty attending the Institute will be asked to apply one or more of the instructional strategies to their classroom or lab, reflect on the student learning they observed and discuss the results with fellow faculty in the Institute.
