Consultations with a Counselor
Program Goals:
- Allow participants the opportunity to share concerns about student behaviors
- Explore ways to address these concerns
- Review the process for referring students to the counselor(s) on campus
Discussion Topics:
- Have you ever encountered a student who you know is bright and yet is not performing?
In fact, the student seems to have low self esteem and often complains of being inadequate. They have low energy, difficulty sleeping, are often late to class if they come at all, and simple tasks seem to require an extreme effort. They may share feelings through written work that reflect their sense of worthlessness or discouragement. They may be depressed. Depression often goes unnoticed. Learn how to approach these students with your concern and refer them to counseling.
- Have you ever encountered a student who becomes quite anxious in unfamiliar or unstructured situations?
Simple assignments raise the student’s anxiety level because their own expectations are unrealistic. They often do not tolerate making mistakes and fear criticism of any kind. Learn what to do and what not to do with the anxious student.
- Have you ever had a student who took large quantities of your time and seemed to monopolize the classroom environment?
This student is demanding and easily becomes dependent on the instructor. They may complain that you give other students a disproportionate amount of time and feel that they are entitled to special help and require unrealistic amounts of your time. Learn how to set limits and avoid the dependency trap.
We invite you to bring examples of difficult students and learn ways of dealing with upsetting situations. You will have an opportunity to “Consult with a Counselor”, hear how others are dealing with challenging students and learn ways of interacting with students that maximize the chances that those difficult students will be willing to seek help. Counseling for students is free and confidential.
