Service Learning Models

Model Description Example
Service Concentration Every Student is required to perform service-learning as a traditional component of the course. The service is integrated into the class curriculum. In ABC 101, students must participate in service to an organization as a requirement for the course. Students must choose a service site that reinforces course learning objectives.
Service Option The service-learning option is in lieu of another component of the course, such as a paper. In ABC 101, students must choose to do either a 20 page research paper or a 20 hour service-learning project. Student must choose a service site that reinforced course learning objectives.
"One-Shot" Service Students participate in a one-time service-learning project. Students in ABC 101 choose to participate in service to Vancouver Housing Authority for the service-learning requirement in their class. Projects must reinforce class learning objectives.
Club and Organization Service Students participate in service-learning as a component of their club or organization activities Students in the XYZ Club participate in service to the Humane Society, including a reflection component, for their club service requirement.
Independent Project A student participates in a service-learning project, independent of a class or club. A student contacts the SL coordinator with a service idea.
