Summer 2008: Service-Learning in Egypt! Fourteen (14) Clark College students engaged in an international service-learning project in Cairo, Egypt.... |

The Clark College History Club and the Service-Learning Program teamed up to engage students in a 3-week study abroad and cross-cultural service-learning project in Egypt during summer of 2008. Fourteen Clark College History Club students experienced the legacy of civilization in the epicenter of the ancient world: Egypt. Students gained valuable insight into the cultures and customs of the ancient and modern-day Egyptians. The group of sixteen- including trip advisors Dr. Anita Fisher, History professor, and Jody Shulnak, Service-Learning Program Manager- explored the country at great length, spanning from Alexandria in the Mediterranean to Abu Simbel near the Sudanese border.
After a fun-filled two-weeks exploring Egypt with Intrepid Travel, the trip concluded with a cross-cultural service-learning project. Clark College students facilitated an English summer camp at the St. John American School, a K-12 school on the outskirts of Cairo, with the goal of improving English conversation skills among Egyptian students and cross-cultural exchange. Students of both institutions walked away with much more than conversation skills, however. New friendships were formed and appreciation for diversity through an understanding of the social, political, religious, and cultural constructs of the host (Egyptian) community. Service-learning within the city of Cairo allowed for a first-hand experience of the diverse cultures that make up our world and students learned life-long lessons about the importance of service to others.
