Begin
with contact information: your name, address, home and message
phone. Don't forget to include your email address!
Use specific job objectives for each job for which you are applying. You may also include the employer's name in the job objective, to further customize your resume just for that employer.
Include
experiences (paid or unpaid) that focus on the skills you have
that are related to the job you seek. Emphasize your successes
and accomplishments.
Include
a "skills" section to highlight any special skills that
meet job requirements and use standard industry terminology to
describe them.
If
you are trying to transfer skills to a new employment field, make
your resume easy to read and avoid jargon specific to your previous
job experience.
List college, major, grade point average and date of graduation
in one section. You may include a listing of your coursework in this section, as well.
Eliminate
references that reveal your political, social, ethnic or religious
background.
You
may consider developing different resumes for different organizations
or career areas, focusing on the individual job descriptions,
and addressing your resumes to those requirements.
The
quality of your resume is very important. Have it professionally
typed on a word processor and printed, using a laser printer.
A
cover letter should always accompany a resume. The font and stationery
should match that of your resume (see Style Guidelines).
Your
resume will need revising from time to time even if you don't
change jobs. Be flexible enough to revise your resume as your
professional objective expands or narrows, or as you feel the
need to freshen your approach.
