Co-op, Internship and
Service Learning Programs:  What's the Difference?

Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education is an academic program that allows you to earn college credit for a work experience related to your major. Co-op helps you explore or confirm your career goals, apply classroom learning to real world situations and practice or strengthen your interpersonal and technical skills. It exposes you to work methods and state-of-the-art technology in industry. It also improves your ability to make the transition from school to work, following completion or near-completion of a degree or certificate program.

Co-ops may be paid or non-paid positions with for-profit or non-profit organizations. Contact the Internship & Job Developer for more information or for assistance in finding a co-op placement. For a list of past co-op work sites, click here; they are also in the online job database system. Some Clark College programs require a co-op experience for graduation. All co-ops require faculty approval for credit.  Information sessions are held quarterly and listed in the class schedule.

How to Find a Co-op or Internship?

Internships

Internships are normally non-paid, entry-level work experiences with for-profit or non-profit organizations. However, if the internship is non-paid and is with a for-profit employer, the experience must be under the auspices of the co-op program, earning college credit. Some Clark College programs require an internship or "capstone experience" for graduation. The terms "internship" and "co-op" may be used synonymously among employers. Lists of internships are on file in the Employment Services Center Employment Services Center and in the online job database system. Occasionally, internships are listed with individual faculty members. The Internship & Job Developer in the Employment Services Center can help you find an internship.

Service Learning

Service Learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility (Community College National Center for Community Engagement). Faculty at Clark College integrates service-learning as a course requirement to enhance students learning experience, career exploration and commitment to the community. The Service Learning and Internship program manager can assist you in finding an appropriate service-learning project for your course.

Volunteering

A volunteer is someone who performs a community service out of their own free will. Volunteers are un-paid and will dedicate their time and energy to help a non-profit organization. The Service Learning and Internship program manager can assist you in finding an appropriate volunteer opportunity or you can search the Clark College Volunteer Database for current volunteer projects.
