Why do people choose to become a tutor ?

Personal rewards and satisfaction are gained from helping others with specific needs. Sharing knowledge with a student has a positive impact on the entire community.

Benefits to the tutor include gaining skills and knowledge that could influence areas of:

  • Career enhancement through documentation of work experience.
  • Increased community visibility and work recommendations
  • Accomplishment that makes a difference

How do I get started ?
  1. Call the literacy lab (992-2750) and request and application. Fill out the application and return it to our office.
  2. You will be called for an orientation. This is an excellent time to ask additional questions.
  3. After the orientation, you will attend the free tutor training workshop. After you complete the workshop, you are ready to be matched to a student. It is that simple.

Please call for the time and date of the next workshop.

Who are the volunteer tutors ?

They are community members just like you. They are professional men and women, college students, homemakers, retired citizens, people who wish to help others in the community.

Will I need special training ?

Yes. Free tutor training workshops are held throughout the year. They provide the tutor with the necessary insights and techniques needed to become a successful tutor. Other optional trainings are also presented throughout the year.

What type of requirements are there ?

Volunteer tutoring takes patience, time and commitment. The following requirements apply.

  • Three hours per week tutoring your student in two, one and one-half hour sessions.
  • A six month commitment to the student.
  • One year of college or approved experience teaching someone something at some time.
  • Attendance and completion of the free 12 hour workshop. It meets four evenings for three hours per session.
