Clark College launched its 75th anniversary on October 1, 2008 with great events covering 75 hours

2008-2009 CLARK COLLEGE DIAMOND JUBILEE EVENTS
   
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee October 1, 2008 -- Clark's 75th anniversary was a day to remember. It included students, faculty and staff gathered around the Clark College Chime Tower to sing "Happy Birthday." That was followed by the dedication of the Ellis F. Dunn Community Room, birthday cakes, tours and a gala evening celebration culminating in the lighting of the Chime Tower. 
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee October 2, 2008 -- Clark hosted a "Rock the Vote" rally and a reception acknowledging the administrators, faculty and staff members who worked on the college's 2008 accreditation self-study.
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee October 3, 2008 -- This exciting day featured an open house at Clark College at Town Plaza and dedication of the Roy and Virginia Andersen Educational Complex.  We also hosted our first Penguin Oktoberfest which included an Alumni Hospitality Suite.

Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee October 5, 2008 -- The Archer Gallery extended the celebration by hosting a reception for its first exhibit of the year -- an exhibit by artist Ruth Patterson Hart.
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee October 8-10, 2008 -- Clark College hosted our ten-year accreditation visit by representatives of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.   The goal of accreditation is to ensure that the quality of education provided by institutions of higher education.
      
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee November 4, 2008 -- Clark College journalism professor Christina Kopinski launched the college's 2008-2009 Faculty Speaker Series by hosting a discussion on "Politics, the Press and Polarization."

November 4, 2008 -- The Gaiser Student Center was “Election Central” on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 4 as Clark College welcomed the Clark County Auditor’s Office and Elections Department as well as Clark-Vancouver Television (CVTV).  On election night, voter results from Clark County were unveiled and CVTV broadcast live on from 8-10:30 p.m.  Candidates from all parties visited throughout the evening.

Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee November 8, 2008 -- Clark College hosted the first regional Elementary Science Olympiad, established to encourage elementary school students to explore the world of science.

November 17, 2008 -- Dr. James Sardo of the Portland Veteran Affairs Medical Center was the guest speaker in the college's “Mental Health Monday” series. Dr. Sardo discussed "Mental Health Implications of War." The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Gaiser Student Center from noon to 1 p.m.

Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee November 17-21, 2008 -- Clark College welcomed the community and celebrate the world by hosting a week of special events in honor of International Education Week.  Events included a passport fair, held in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service on Friday, Nov. 21.
       
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee December 10, 2008 -- The Clark College Columbia Writers Series welcomed Sam Green, Washington State's first and only poet laureate.
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee December 10, 2008 -- The Clark College Nursing Program hosted its 100th pinning ceremony -- a milestone for the program and its graduates.   The event was held at Skyview High School auditorium.

January 23, 2009 -- Clark College hosted a special event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The program featured panelists from First Families of Vancouver, an organization which illuminates the story of Vancouver, Washington's African-American community from the World War II influx to the present by gathering the stories of its pioneering families.

Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee January 27, 2009 -- Clark College hosted its annual Winter Open House and Scholarship Night.  The event is held each year to give prospective and current students tips on how to seek and apply for scholarships. This year, the event included an open house to provide an opportunity for students to talk to representatives from academic departments and student services.

February 5, 2009 -- Clark College took part in the second National Teach-In on Global Warming.

February 7, 2009 -- The Clark College machining and welding departments hosted the 2008 Regional High School Skills USA Competition.

February 20, 2009 -- Clark College hosted its 12th annual Professional Technical Day. The college expected to welcome more than 300 high school students from throughout Southwest Washington, as well as some from the Portland area.

The college's winter quarter Faculty Speaker Series event took place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Gaiser Student Center.

Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hilton Vancouver Washington.

Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee April 27, 2009 -- Clark College honored ten faculty members who have been granted tenure by the college’s Board of Trustees.  Karl Bailey (chemistry), Susan K. Brookhart (chemistry), Carlos Castro (sociology), Geneva Chao (English), Jill Darley-Vanis (English), M. Gail Fujimoto (nursing), Zachary M. Grant (library), Tani McBeth (human development), S. Layne Russell (paralegal) and Brenda Walstead (dental hygiene) were honored at a reception sponsored by the Clark College Board of Trustees and the college’s Office of Instruction.
        
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee May 6, 2009 -- Physicist and astronomer Dick Shamrell was the presenter for the college's for the spring quarter Faculty Speaker Series event:  "Dick and Oswald's Excellent Australian Adventure:  Voyage to the Southern Skies and Hear the Scientific and Cultural Stories Told by the Stars Down Under."  The lecture was held. in the Penguin Student Lounge and was followed by a Star Party at the Clark College Chime Tower.
Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee May 12, 2009 -- It was a day to celebrate -- and make -- history.  One of the final signature events in the 75th anniversary celebration included the unveiling of the 2009 Phoenix, the opening of the 2009 Art Student Annual, and the unsealing of the college's 50th anniversary time capsule and the dedication of the college's 75th anniversary time capsule.

May 28, 2009 -- A "Celebration of Service" was held fin the Penguin Student Lounge.  This recognition event honored the faculty, students and community partners who participated in the college's service learning program during the 2008-2009 academic year.

May 28, 2009 -- The Clark College OSWALD (Outstanding Students With Academic Leadership and Development skills) Awards were presented during a celebration in the Gaiser Student Center.

June 7, 2009 -- Three U.S. premieres were featured in the spring quarter concert of the Clark College Orchestra.  They are: "Mil Lenarium" by Joan Albert Amargos; "Piano Concerto in E" by Domenico Bartolucci; and "Camperola, sardana per a orquestra" by Eduard Toldra.

Image of a diamond for Clark's diamond jubilee June 18, 2009 -- Clark College hosted its annual commencement ceremony and saluted the Class of 2009.  Two days later, the college held a graduation ceremony for students in its GED and high school completion programs.
