FAQ

I’ve noticed that your department offers several Saturday classes. If I have to miss part of one, can I still earn credit?
The Saturday classes are offered in a “workshop” format to provide a flexible alternative to the regular day and evening sections of our courses. The content of the Saturday sections is condensed, so that any missed class time would result in missing an important core component of the class. It is the Department of Human Development’s policy that students must attend each Saturday workshop in it’s entirety in order to receive a grade and/or credit.

If I’ve already taken a course on BlackBoard, do I still need to attend an on-campus orientation?
If a course notes a mandatory orientation, you will need to attend it in order to stay enrolled in the course. Some of our online classes include assessments, inventories and other materials that are needed for the course and not available online. You will receive these materials and other relevant information about the course during the orientation. The only required on-campus meeting is the mandatory orientation. If you are unable to attend this orientation, you must contact the instructor prior to the orientation. If possible, arrangements will be made to accommodate you.

Do Human Development classes “count” toward a degree?
Yes. All HDEV course will transfer as general elective credits as part of the general Associate of Arts Degree. Some of our courses also count toward Certificate (any HDEV course) and Applied Science Degrees (HDEV 105, 123, or 155) as part of the Human Relations distribution requirement. Please speak with an advisor to determine how your HDEV credits will transfer for your certificate or degree.

What classes would you advise for undecided students?
Students who are undecided about a college program/major or career goal should consider taking either HDEV 100 (Career and Life Planning) or HDEV 101 (Career Exploration). Both of these courses offer career inventories to suggest potential good-fit careers, and guided instruction in utilizing online and in-print resources to explore occupations. Complete descriptions of these courses can be found in the Human Development course description section.

What classes should you start with as a new student?
The HDEV courses are designed to enhance student success in college and are a great way for new students to fine-tune their study skills, clarify career goals, gain confidence, communicate clearly and learn personal coping skills. Many new students begin their academic career with a course in Math and/or English (as determined by your placement test scores or transferred-in coursework), and a College Success or Career Development Course. College Success (HDEV 117), and Motivation and Study Skills (HDEV116) are designed to streamline your learning and help you to become a more efficient and effective learner. Career and Life Planning (HDEV 100) and Career Exploration (HDEV 101) assist students in determining their career goals. Both of these popular courses are very appropriate for a new student.

Please see Human Development course descriptions for descriptions of these course and all of our HDEV course offerings.
