Why literacy matters

A literate population:

• Has a higher earning capability. A high school graduate makes about 42% more than someone without a HS diploma.
• Is healthier. People who can read are able to educate themselves about healthy behaviors and are better informed about health care options.
• Has parents who are involved in their children’s education. Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.
• Is more civic and community minded. Residents are more likely to vote and participate in school and community activities.
