Becoming a Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor

If you are interested in helping people learn and enjoy a diversity of people; if you can read, write and speak English; and if you can commit several hours a week for at least six months, you can help. Tutoring is an excellent way to make a difference in someone else’s life and in our community. It is also personally rewarding.

Volunteer tutors:
  • Help individual students
  • Facilitate English conversation groups
  • Assist in Basic Skills classes

Giving a student personal attention often motivates him or her in a way not possible in a classroom setting. Literacy tutors spend time building the student’s confidence to encourage a more positive self image and improve other aspects of the student’s life.

Other volunteer opportunities
You can also participate by lending your skills and interests in other ways – help plan events, publicize activities, manage our library or provide office support.

Support us financially
Your contributions directly support the work of our tutors, providing them with lesson plans, textbooks and dictionaries. They will buy basic learning tools for our students such as flashcards, notebooks and pens. Your donations will also fund workshops for tutors and field trips for students learning about the community.

Make your commitment now! You’ll be glad you did.
