Who are volunteer tutors?
They are community members just like you—professional men and women,
college students, homemakers, retired citizens, people who wish to help others
in the community.
Do I need to be a teacher?
No. You don’t need an education background. We provide a comprehensive training for tutors to give them the background and tools for successful tutoring.
Will I need special training?
Yes. Free tutor trainings are held throughout the year. They will provide you with the necessary insights and techniques needed to become a successful tutor. Other optional trainings are presented throughout the year.
What are the requirements?
Volunteer tutoring takes patience, time and flexibility. We ask for:
- Attendance and completion of an orientation and a free 7-hour tutor training.
- 2-3 hours per week of your time.
- A commitment of at least three months.
- Call the Student learning Center at 360-992-2750 to request an application packet. Fill out the application and return it to our office.
- We will check your references and call you for an interview. This is an excellent time to ask additional questions.
- You must complete a background check through Clark College.
- Next, you may register for the orientation and tutor training.
- Once you complete the training, you may be matched with an individual student or a group of students or you may be given a classroom assignment. It is that simple.
