Statewide Honors for Clark Student Journalists
Student journalists for The Independent, Clark College’s student newspaper,
earned 11 awards in the 2010 Washington Community College Journalism Awards

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Clark College student journalists won 11 awards and The Independent took third-place honors in the overall competition of the 2010 Washington Community College Journalism Awards. The awards were presented at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash., on May 22.
Judges reviewed entries from 12 community colleges and gave awards in 23 categories. The Independent earned honors in nine categories, sweeping the sports feature category, and receiving a trophy cup for its overall showing. Entries reflected news coverage between spring 2009 and winter 2010.
First-place honors and medals went to Editor-in-Chief Jordan Frasier for his profile story, “The scariest moment of her life”; News Editor Kandra Kent for her general news story, “Work study may be punching out its timecard”; Sports Editor Colton Woods for his sports news story, “Baseball club plays the waiting game”; Opinion Editor Kevin Vandenburg for his sports feature story, “March of the penguin men’s team”; and Life Editor John Consiglio for his headline “Work study may be punching out its timecard.”
Editor-in-Chief Frasier, Copy Editor Corinne Mooney, and reporters Sam Eckhart and Nicole Tolmie received second-place honors for comprehensive coverage. Reporter Stephanie Pisarek earned third-place honors for individual commentary. News Editor Kent and Photo Editor Alex Cochran earned second- and third-place honors, respectively, in the sports feature category. Frasier won third-place honors in the news photo category, and Creative Designer Chelsea Parkhurst earned third place honors for illustrations.
Frasier said, “Clark had a great showing in the competition and hopefully the trend will continue in the years to come. We have three more issues of The Independent to publish this quarter and we look forward to continuing to share our work with the Clark community.”
