Accessing ARTstor from off-campus In order to use ARTstor from off campus, you must first access ARTstor from on-campus and register for an account. After you have registered for an account with ARTstor, you will have off-campus access to ARTstor for 120 days. Each time you use ARTstor from on-campus, the 120-day limit resets. For step-by-step instructions, see:
Details About Off-Campus Access Most databases provide access to online resources, but ARTstor provides an interface for both online and offline resources. The Offline Image Viewer in an example of an ARTstor resource that resides on your local computer. To successfully connect to ARTstor via the Offline Image Viewer, you will need to be physically located at one of your institution's IP-validated workstations. This requirement has caused some inconvenience for users who would like to use the Offline Image Viewer while they are off campus. For this reason, ARTstor has developed an alternative method of remote authentication: the Remote Access Grace Period. The Remote Access Grace Period grants all registered users temporary access to ARTstor from outside their institution's IP range. This means that each time you log onto your ARTstor account from a valid IP address -- i.e. from a location at Clark College -- you are granted 120 days of remote access to the ARTstor Digital Library. During this time, you will also be able to authenticate the Offline Image Viewer program and download your ARTstor Image Groups to any computer. In order to reset the grace period, all you need to do is log onto your ARTstor account again from a valid IP address, whether on campus or through your institution's proxy server. Doing so will restart the Remote Access Grace Period clock, resetting it to the maximum length of time, 120 days. During the Remote Access Grace Period, you able to access ARTstor from any computer connected to the Internet. While you are off campus, you may go directly to ARTstor's home page, www.artstor.org. When you click on the link to "Search & Browse for Images" in the lower right corner of the page, a new window will popup, prompting you to enter your ARTstor email address and password. Enter the same email address and password that you used to register for your ARTstor account. Once you enter this information, ARTstor will check whether or not you have logged onto your account from a valid IP address within the last 120 days. If you have, you may go directly into the ARTstor Digital Library. If you get a message that your Remote Access Grace Period has expired, you may always reset it by logging onto your ARTstor account from on campus or through your institution's proxy server. Your account never expires and as soon as you log back onto your account, all of your Image Groups will still be preserved as you left them. 1. In order to take advantage of the Remote Access Grace Period, you must have already registered an account with ARTstor from a valid IP address within your home institution - whether physically on campus or after logging onto the proxy server. You may not register a new account with ARTstor from off campus. Since you would be coming into ARTstor remotely, with an unrecognized IP address, there would be no way for your account to be properly associated with your institution. Registering an account within your institution's valid IP range creates this association automatically. If you have not already done so, please see: "How do I register an account with ARTstor?" 2. Each time you log onto your ARTstor account from within your institution (or via your institution's proxy server), you will reset your Remote Access Grace Period to the maximum length - 120 days. This means that you will be able to access ARTstor from any computer connected to the Internet, located anywhere in the world, for the next 120 days. You will also be able to authenticate the Offline Image Viewer and/or download your ARTstor Image Groups at any computer. If your Remote Access Grace Period expires, simply log on to your ARTstor account using an campus computer (whether a library terminal, a computer lab workstation, or your office computer), or after connecting to your institution's proxy server. This will reset the clock and renew your Remote Access Grace Period to the full 120 days. 3. If you try to access online ARTstor remotely, when you click on the "Search & Browse for Images" link on www.artstor.org, a new window will open requesting your email address and password. This is the same email address and password that you typically use to log on to your ARTstor account. Enter this information and click the "Submit" button in this form. If you have entered a valid ARTstor user account and you have time remaining in your Remote Access Grace Period, you will be able to enter the ARTstor Digital Library. As you enter, you will be reminded of how many days remain in your grace period. 4. If you are using the Offline Image Viewer off campus and need to logon to download your ARTstor Image Groups, enter your email address and password when prompted, as you normally do. For more information about importing ARTstor Image Groups into the Offline Image Viewer, see: "Importing an ARTstor Image Group". Provided that you have logged on to your ARTstor account within the past 120 days - i.e. that you have time remaining in your Remote Access Grace Period - you will see the list of your folder and Image Groups, per usual. You will also be able to use your email address and password to reauthenticate the Offline Image Viewer software when prompted to do so. Note: You must have Offline Image Viewer version 1.2 or higher installed for the Remote Access Grace Period to function properly. If you have not already downloaded and installed the latest version of the Offline Image Viewer, please see: "Installing the Offline Image Viewer". For more information about obtaining stable URLs to link to images and Image Groups in ARTstor, please see: "How do I link to an image from my web page?" and "How do I link to an Image Group from my web page?" 6. Please remember that all ARTstor users - whether on campus or off campus - are subject to ARTstor's Terms and Conditions of Use. These terms require, among other things, that you not share your password with others. This restriction applies to sharing your email address and password with someone else so that they can access ARTstor remotely. For more information on the Terms and Conditions of Use, please visit our public web site: http://www.artstor.org/info/about/terms_conditions.jsp. For more help, see:
