Computer Use Policy
Cannell Library provides library collections and computer resources to meet the informational and instructional needs of Clark College students, faculty and staff. We aim for a balanced collection of books, periodicals, media, and electronic resources representing diverse viewpoints to provide students with resources needed to examine issues freely and make decisions as described in the Collection Development Policy. Within this context, we provide access to the Internet and online resources on computers located in the library.

Cannell Library’s Internet access is through a private network that is provided exclusively for the benefit of students, employees, staff, visitors, conference attendees, invitees, and others involved in campus life and the academic community, as well as members of the public. Access may only be obtained through campus facilities or through a user access code.

Internet use by guests (persons not affiliated with Clark College) is a privilege granted at the discretion of Cannell librarians. Guests must obtain a Cannell Library card, sign in at the Reference Desk, and limit use to one hour. Printing is not available to guests.

Library public computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, in times of high use when patrons are waiting for computers, library staff may give priority to Clark students working on course-related research. Cannell Library is considered a shared public place. Users should be aware that some materials accessed on the Internet may be considered controversial, offensive, or inappropriate for viewing in a public setting. Cannell Librarians ask users, out of consideration for others, to take care not to display or broadcast in any shared public place any images, sounds, or messages that could create an atmosphere of discomfort, harassment or intimidation for others, and to refrain from transmitting such images, sounds or messages to others using Cannell Library computing resources. Displaying materials which create a hostile environment for work or study will not be permitted.

In some situations where the display or broadcast of such materials is necessary to further a legitimate educational purpose, Cannell librarians ask that users be sensitive to the public nature of shared facilities. Please make advance arrangements with the reference librarians to access these materials in a private environment.

Users should be aware of copyright law as it applies to computer software. It is a criminal offense to copy any software that is protected by copyright. A formal copyright declaration need not be in evidence for legal copyright protection to be in force.

No eating, including chewing tobacco. No smoking, in accordance with the campus-wide policy.
Library CardsLibrary card
  • Either a valid library card from Cannell Library or a valid Clark College ID is required to borrow Clark College library materials, including course reserves that are restricted to library use only.
  • All current Clark College students, faculty and staff may obtain a library card at the Cannell Library Check Out Desk by presenting picture identification and confirmation of their current mailing address regardless of residence.
  • Residents of community college service district 14 who are over age 16 may apply for a Cannell Library card with valid picture identification, proof of current residence and age.
  • Cardholders are responsible for the prompt return and the physical condition of any items checked out on their card.
  • Lost or stolen cards must be reported.
Lost and Found
Keys, purses and valuables found in the library are taken to Security in Gaiser Hall as soon as possible. Other items are kept in the lost and found box at the Check Out Desk for approximately 2 weeks.

Overdue and Damaged Items
Overdue items and fines for damaged or lost materials may prevent Clark College students from receiving grades, transcripts, or college checks. Students whose records are blocked must return or pay for items in order to register for the next quarter. Fines are not charged for late materials, except for Summit items. Unpaid fees are referred to a collection agency.

For lost or damaged materials, there are designated charges. Payment of replacement fees does not constitute purchase of materials.

Refunds are given for Clark College library items returned in good condition within 6 months of the payment date. No refunds will be given for overdue fees or when reimbursement has already been paid to another lending agency.

Periodicals
Periodicals are for library use only and holds cannot be placed on them.
Renewals
For Cannell Library books, a maximum of two renewals is allowed provided there are no holds on the item being renewed, the item is not overdue, or the item is not a reserve item. Items borrowed from Summit may be renewed only once. Class reserves cannot be renewed.

Requests
Requests can be placed on Cannell Library materials online on or off campus, except by community patrons. Summit items may only be requested by Clark College students enrolled in credit classes, current faculty and staff. Printing and paging of requests is done twice daily, generally mid-morning and early evening during weekdays and once on weekend days when the library is open.

Patrons requesting books at Cannell will be notified by mail or email when items are ready for checkout. Books that check out for 3 weeks will be held at least 7 days on the hold shelf after a patron notice is printed. Summit items limited to 3-day loan are only held for 3 days on the hold shelf.

All items must be picked up at the Check Out Desk when the library is open. The campus library does not mail out books or send books through campus mail.

Phone requests to retrieve items from the stacks will be accepted and searched within one hour providing there is staff available.

Summit
Summit items circulate for 21 days or 3 days as determined by the lending library. Only one renewal is permitted for items on 3-day loan and 21-day loan.
Video/Audio Collection
Students may borrow one videocassette, audiotape or CD for use inside the library at a time. Listening/viewing equipment is available on the second floor. Faculty may only check out videocassettes for their Clark College classes. DVDs may be checked out for 3 days.
